What if the words of Paul Eluard told the story of Sébastien Geslin?
He was just 8 years old when he first began to draw. Portraits at first. A few years later, his parents acknowledged he had "golden hands". He joined the team of a Vendée-based shoe manufacturer, where, as a model maker, he spent years exploring the realm of creativity. In a bespoke workshop, he continued to perfect his expertise, and already imagined, behind each sole, a silhouette, a character, a sensibility...
But this fascinating work demanded great precision and a daily eye for detail. Sébastien had to face the facts: his eyesight was failing. He needed glasses.
A lover of beautifully crafted pieces, he set out to find THE pair of glasses of his dreams... and eventually decided to design his own frames.
It was made of padouka solid wood with an orange red colour. Unfortunately, the joy of a job well done was as intense as it was short-lived...:
"One spring day, I went to a family dinner. I had my glasses in the car. I showed them to a cousin, who enthusiastically tried them on. But his face wasn't the same size as mine and the frame broke. It's when I realized that a pair of glasses must be a lot stronger than people could imagine.
This experience played an important role in the rest of Sébastien's career.
And the matter of the shape of the face was the inspiration for the development of hinges with an unprecedented style.
" When I started working on this hinge for temporal adjustment, I thought it already existed: it was obvious to me, but I saw the surprise in the opticians' eyes ".
Persevering and determined, Sébastien returned to the drawing board and made himself a new frame. Then others, just to see, until he had a small collection.
A fortunate coincidence takes him to the World Optics Show. This was 2017.
"I have 4 trays of 6 pairs of glasses. 4 shapes and 6 finishes. I'm given a few square meters on a stand. I displayed my work in front of customers from all over the world"..
People stopped and the magic started to happen. Sébastien took orders from Switzerland, Mexico, Belgium and France.
The wheels started turning.
Moved by the power of the forest as a source of protection and energy and overwhelmed by the longevity of these hundred-year-old trees, Sébastien Geslin loves the smell of the sweet, woody or smoky notes of the timber entering his workshop.
Once they have passed through his 'Geppetto' fingers, they will become Ange, Bull, or Babelin a Line, Mad or Cara finish.
Spontaneously bestowed names on the unique, numbered creations.
" "As soon as I enter the workshop, the magic happens". ".
A life made of wood, patience and a great deal of dedication.
